Apartment hunting guide

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

As I've taken the past week to slowly but surely move my belongings back to my parents' house I keep thinking about the type of apartment I would like to move into (should I be able to choose). I'm a born and bred list maker, so of course I divide up my wishes into must haves, nice to haves, and awesomes (not necessary items, but awesome)! This is actually something I've done when looking for apartments before, and it's been a great way to organize my thoughts and make sure that my emotional attachment to something unnecessary (like granite countertops, new appliances, etc.) didn't cause me to spend way too much on an apartment I couldn't afford.

in-unit/building laundry • close to downtown • natural light

For instance, I know that I have to have laundry either in my apartment or in the building. While in London I had a laundromat right downstairs, but even so, it was so expensive and I avoided doing laundry, since it took so much time - gross, but true. Very practical and super important! I also need natural light since I get weirdly super depressed if I don't get enough (does that happen to anyone else?). Also, I definitely want to be close to downtown life! Understandable, right?

neighborhood • hardwood floors • decent sized bedroom

As for my nice to haves, they aren't necessary, but they're definite pluses, in my opinion. Though I want to be near downtown life, I'd love to live in a neighborhood-type area. Give me a few streets with homes and sidewalks and I'm set. Our house had hardwoods this past year throughout, and if I never have to go back to carpets I won't. They're so easy to clean! As for my bedroom, I don't think anyone would say no to a bigger bedroom!

full kitchen • curb appeal • full bathroom

The awesomes are just nice perks that I can't ask too much for. If I had a genie give me home-related wishes, which would actually just be a normal genie come to think of it, I would wish for a full kitchen, some curb appeal (like that door! those windows! that ivy!), and a full bathroom. Ahh, what a life! A girl can dream, right?

  1. I LOVE this post!!! So creative. I'm so glad to have completed my apartment search, and it was stressful and long, but I just didn't want to settle! My must-haves were exactly the same as yours! You will find the right place :) I was home with parents as well, so it was nice not to have to rush into anything!

  2. I LOVE this post. I am a list maker too, and you have some great things on your list. Housing is a pain no matter how you slice and dice it, so I wish you luck in your search!
